Sam Brown made the odd appearance after transitioning from the Colts, but a niggling ham-string injury limited his appearances. The same happened in the first half of last since season, but when he eventually got the injury sorted his game really kicked on. Some excellent performances for the 1st team won him selection into the Cheshire squad, and from there England North U20s.

Last Saturday, the day of the Macc 7s, he was selected to start in his first game in the red shirt. Nick Brown reports on the day: “Sam was selected for the North of England U20s last weekend. The fixture was against London and the South on a very hot day at Broadstreet RUFC in Coventry. Sensibly the game was split into 4 x 20 min periods, so that the lads could cool down and take on water.

The North was made up from 5 Players from Cheshire and the rest from Durham, Northumberland, Yorkshire and Lancashire; which made for an incredibly strong and fast running team, this kind of rugby suited Sam really well! After the South initially put pressure on the North, the lads knuckled down and took control of the game; Sam broke free and with some adept handling put his opposite winger in for a try.

The North’s pack worked hard throughout the match and started to dominate the set piece and the break-downs.  Sam made some more huge breaks from his own 22, and then finished the game-off with 2 well-made tries himself!

The North Team and their Coaches did a fantastic job, winning by a comfortable margin in the end. The North has another match this Sunday at Stafford RUFC which sees them play the South West”.

Well done Sam, it’s great to see so many Macc players performing at their best this season, it bodes well for the campaign ahead.
