MRUFC Golf Day 2023

Neary 100 Friends of Macclesfield Rugby Club attending this years golf day at the prestigious Tytherington Golf Club.

We had 88 players entering the golf competition and a further 8 people entering the drinking competition, under the expert stewardship of our Chairman Bob Cooke. James Cross (who has a proper job and couldn’t play) was there to check the scorecards and make sure that there was no skullduggery.

Anyway the golf, we had 22 teams playing with 1st Team players, Ex Captains, Ex Players, Sponsors, Parents, and Friends of the Club.

The 11th Hole, The signature hole was the highlight, with Robsinsons Brewery providing 88 Bottles of their finest, Macc Beer Festival providing a barrel of beer, the first team lads James & Harry Oliver providing 4 slabs of beer and the wonderful Hunters Gin providing some G&T’s, as you would imagine the hole was visited several times by a few teams, Terry Robson & Bill Knocker managed to stay awake after sampling all of the above whilst severing the players alongside club stalwart Keith Dobson.

The weather was kind to us and as usual the Golf was very average.

The Strongest team of the day was Captained by Tristan Wood, who was so confident he would win he decided to only play 14 holes and retire to the bar, a brave move, in fact like the present England cricket team, alas it didn’t pay off but he did drink lots more beer than the rest of us.

The spoils were taken by Andrew Masseys Team, this is the 6th year they have tried and have been useless in previous years so well done chaps

1st Andrew Massey and his band of brothers

2nd Dr Eldon Burke, Simon Dempsey (the winner of the most beautiful Member), Nick (the Housewives favourite) Smith & Robbo

3rd prize was a Boat race between – The Directors Choice (Jonathan Cooper, Ross Harper, James Oliver & Will Davies) & Oliver Wilsons chaps – This was won by Jonathan Coopers team principally due to the fact Will Davies can drink a pint in under 2 seconds!!

The Champion Golfer was decided by putting the top 2 players head to head (Remmie Miller +3) & Danny Avery (19) the scores were tied on the course, so the beer decided, Danny let himself and the Rugby club down and was beaten by Remmie who drank his pint quicker, sad times.

We did conduct an experiment on the day – Can professional Rugby players drink beer quickly ? Will Cliffe (Sale Sharks) did actually win his teams boat race proving that professional rugby players can drink beer quickly, good to have some education on the day.

A wonderful day was had by everyone, lots of banter, laughs, drinking beer and hopefully no one will lose the bloody trophy this year !

I call upon the Golfers of Macclesfield Rugby Club to gather in June 2024 to play for the claret jug again…….

The MaccRugbyTV cameras were at pre season training with the 1st XV again this week and we caught up with the currently injured Tom Jennings.
