Sandbach v Macclesfield Preview

By David Wilkinson

Derby games against our local rivals Sandbach always have an extra edge for both clubs, and Saturday will be no different. Contests used to be reserved for Cheshire Cup clashes but this will be our fourth encounter in 13 months. Macclesfield just edged the local bragging-rights after a titanic battle for the Cheshire Cup at the end of last season at Lymm. At full time the scores were level, but Macclesfield finished the stronger pulling away 45 – 31 to relieve Sandbach of the silverware. It’s a moment that the Sandbach players will likely be reminded of by their Coaches, should they need any extra incentive.

Since then fortunes have been very different for the two clubs. Macclesfield went from strength-to-strength, winning the Pappa Johns Cup and starting the season with five, 5-point wins; Sandbach’s fortunes have not been so fair, loosing players in the close season and suffering injuries this season, and without experienced replacements. Myles Hall has come out of retirement to help the Bach boys, but on Saturday they are bolstered with the return of some of their injured players.

The boys polishing their moves for Saturday

Head Coach Darren Lamon told me after training, that the boys had enjoyed the week off and had trained really well on Tuesday and Thursday: “We are all very excited about the game, but any talk about our relative positions has been banned; they (Sandbach) will be up for this, they will be stronger, and we will give them every respect”. We will have to wait and see tactically, what game-plan Macclesfield try’s to employ on Saturday, whatever it is, Darren will want an 80 minute performance from the boys, rather than taking our foot off the throat, after building a decent lead, which has been the case so far. Points difference could become an important factor at the end of the season, and we are +50 points behind our main rivals. None of Macclesfield’s injured come in for contention this week, but several are almost ready and could be in the mix next week.

There will be a big crowd on Saturday, so get there early for a beer and to cheer the boys onto the pitch. Kick-off 3.00pm, the team is: 1. Dan Percival, 2. Ollie Longmore, 3. Samir Tahraoui, 4. Elliot Alston, 5. Harry Harding, 6. Brendan Berry, 7. Tom Burden, 8. James Oliver Captain, 9. Dan Martin, 10. Charlie Attis, 11. Tom Jennings, 12. Terence Babarinsa, 13. Harry Oliver, 14. Sam Brown, 15. Harry Blackwell, 16. Phil Laing, 17. Rhys Davies, 18. Sam Broster.
