WYER & WILSON PUT THE SHINE ON THE CUP

Macclesfield Women 74 – Stoke Women 22

By Paul Jakobowski

A hat-trick from debutant Jasmine Wilson and five tries from Pip Wyer were some of the highlights in what eventually turned out to be a comprehensive win against a relatively inexperienced team from Stoke Rugby Club.  This was the first time that Macclesfield’s Ladies had entered the Papa Johns Junior Women’s Cup and the squad had been buzzing all week in readiness for round 1; and there was a sense of anticipation from a large crowd that gathered for the game.

Stoke started the better and took an early lead as it appeared that nerves had got to the home side; however, the team responded quickly with scores from Tanni Whalley and Captain Mel Bramley, both converted by Bex Ward. Macclesfield were beginning to apply pressure, but some poor tackling led to the visitors breaking out; despite Wilson desperately covering back her tackle was judged to be high, resulting in a penalty try and a yellow card for the youngest member of the side. Coach Simon Dempsey gathered the team under the posts and instructions were issued on improving both the tackling and rucking. At this point Macclesfield had had their lead cut to 14 -12. The response was emphatic with line breaks from Hannah Green and Julia Ashford, leading to three scores in ten minutes from Wyer, Sophie Barnett and Wilson who was now back on the pitch.

The second half started with the forwards making confident carries and line breaks. Mary Thorpe was growing in confidence and distributing well, leading to a four try blitz with Barnett scoring her second in between three from the effervescent Wyer; all credit to Stoke who came back to score themselves. But with fatigue setting in it was one way traffic, only some outstanding tackling from the Stoke full back prevented Macclesfield from scoring. Eventually the Stoke defence broke, with Wilson scoring a brace of tries to complete an exciting debut for the youngster, and Wyer added a fifth, with a final score of Macclesfield 74 – Stoke 22. The team now have four weeks to prepare for the second round against Stone at Priory Park, and will welcome back several players from injury and unavailability; selection for the starting 15 will be competitive.
