Anselmians Preview

By David Wilkinson

James Cross reminded me of the day that Anselmians well and truly beat Macclesfield in the Quarter Final of the Cheshire Cup at Priory Park, it was March 19th 2022. It was an excellent performance by the Birkenhead team; they had beaten a team two leagues above them convincingly 31 – 54. Anselmians won promotion, and won promotion again last season, however their climb has stuttered so far this season. They sit in tenth position with wins against Kendal and Sandbach, with their home record demonstrating that they are a difficult team to beat on their own turf.

Honing their plays for Saturday’s challenge

There’s a lot changed since March ’22, Macclesfield now have their sights set on the title and promotion back to National 2, and will not be approaching the challenge on Saturday lightly.  These were some of Head Coach Darren Lamonds’ thoughts after Thursday night’s training: “Recovery post the Blackburn game has been good, but focus at training has been very much on not underestimating the challenge. We recognise the influence of some experienced Caldy players in their team, and they have some big-hitters, but we have a particular game plan for Saturday. The Coaching team has prepared the playing squad well and we have virtually the same starting team as against Blackburn”.

The Coaches round-up for Saturday

Sam Brown starts, and will be eager to impress replacing Sam Adu who has a hamstring strain; James Cross starts on the bench, for what will be his first game in the ones so far this season. Kick-off is 2.15 at Eastham, just off the M53, junction 5 south of Bromborough. Saturday’s team is: 1. Dan Percival, 2. Ollie Longmore, 3. Samir Tahraoui, 4. Rhys Davies, 5. Harry Harding, 6. Elliot Alston, 7. Tom Burden, 8. James Oliver Captain, 9. Dan Martin, 10. Tom Morton, 11. Tom Jennings, 12. Terence Babarinsa, 13. Harry Oliver, 14.Sam Brown, 15. Harry Blackwell, 16. Brendan Berry, 17. James Cross, 18. Charlie Attis.
