THE WOMEN’S TOUGHEST TEST

Leigh v Macclesfield in the Papa Johns National Women’s Junior Cup

By Annie James

The women’s team have had a very successful start to the season, winning their opening three fixtures, with the most recent against a physically strong Eccles side. They now face their biggest challenge of the season, perhaps even since the formation of the women’s section several years ago. Leigh Ladies are their opponents this Sunday. Leigh has considerable depth in their squad and currently competes in the Women’s NC North League 2, two leagues higher than Macclesfield; and having lost only one game this season. In terms of league stature, this is Macclesfield’s David versus Leigh’s Goliath.

Macclesfield are expecting a tough physical encounter against a well organised and drilled side.  The ladies are well prepared and have had help in training from: Karl Droy, Dale Crompton, Tom Burden and James Cross, from the senior squad, delivering extra sessions for the forwards, which has been hugely beneficial. There has been an emphasis on rucking and tackling in training over the last fortnight. Whilst in attack the focus has been on securing quick-ball at the breakdown and moving it quickly to our very dangerous back line. Macclesfield are a quick, skilful, athletic side, and will look to move the ball wide whenever possible on Sunday; the side cannot afford to get drawn into a wrestling match against a physically stronger Leigh side.

The whole squad is buoyant and looking forward to the challenge on Sunday.  Back row Hannah Green explained: “To be in the third round of a national cup is an achievement in itself for us Macclesfield women”, going on to describe her excitement at getting on to the pitch to learn and improve against a well-respected team. While coaches Dempsey and Jakubowski are quietly confident that the team will rise to the occasion and deliver a full-Macc performance and do the Club proud!

Get behind our ladies this Sunday, kick-off is 2.00pm at Leigh Rugby Club

Only one result to 'round up' today, but it's a crucial 5 points for the 1st XV, who are now top of the table after Rossendale lost over at Stockport. Here Tommy Taylor (Defence Coach) gives his views on the match. The lads now head into a well-deserved break, and face Blackburn up at Ramsgreave Drive in a fortnight. Next weekend it’s all the Guinness Men's Six Nations action on the screens down at Priory Park. 🍻 🏉 tinyurl.com/MRUTV ... See MoreSee Less
