Wirral Preview

By David Wilkinson

Whilst Saturday’s contest is a league/Cheshire Cup double-header, I doubt either team is now too concerned re the Cheshire Cup points, given Caldy’s inclusion in Wirral and Macclesfield’s conference league. 3rd versus 4th  in the North West One is the headline of the day, although the 14 points that separates the two teams doesn’t make it quite the head-to-head, winner takes all contest; that said all games against Wirral are highly competitive. Last time these teams faced each other in September was a humdinger with Macclesfield pulling away in the final stages 32 – 48.

These were Head Coach, Darren Lamond’s, thoughts after Thursday night’s training: “The boys were massively up for it on Tuesday and trained well again tonight – they’re still out there now! We know we have a real challenge again on Saturday; they are fourth, after playing some very good rugby. They have a very good 15, and quality half backs, with two very experienced Centres. We will be continuing our rotation of players in the team, whilst working around injuries and a couple of unavailable players. Sam Brown keeps his place on the wing after an excellent performance against Caldy, and Laingy, who’s been outstanding in training, makes the bench. Ollie Church also gets on the bench after his showing against Caldy. The squad is now looking in excellent health, with the Saturday team now being selected from 25 players; with hopefully Matt Harrison and Josh DeGroot getting the all-clear to come back into the mix next week”.

Charlie Attis is away for a few weeks and Terence Babarinsa is away this week, the latter’s non-availability giving the opportunity to see Harry Blackwell in the Centre. It will be a different kind of partnership in midfield, but none the less creative. Looking across the backline it’s loaded with pace, and is probably the quickest, on paper, that we have fielded for a very long time. Both the 2s and the 1sts are flying high in their leagues , with Macclesfield again being awarded Team of the Month, for the second time in three months. Three teams are at home on Saturday, with the 2s also playing Wirral, it’s also the Christmas lunch, so get there early for a seat in the Stand, it promise to be a fabulous day. I will be donning my red coat on The Polar Express again, so President Peter Harper will be in control on the Stand – be kind! Kick-off is 3.00pm, the team is: 1. Dan Percival, 2. Brendan Berry, 3. James Cross, 4. Rhys Davies, 5. Harry Harding, 6. Elliot Alston, 7. Tom Burden, 8. James Oliver Captain, 9. Dan Martin, 10. Tom Morton, 11. Sam Adu, 12. Harry Blackwell, 13. Harry Oliver, 14. Sam Brown, 15. James O’Donnell, 16. Simeon Meek, 17. Phil Laing, 18. Ollie Church.
