Colts head to the Cheshire Cup Final

After a shaky start to the season, the Colts will take part in the Cheshire Cup Final this weekend, taking on  Sandbach Colts.

This season has seen the Colts overcome early challenges as the new U17s merged with the established U18s.  Competing in Tier C in the Halbro NW Colts Leagues, early matches were a struggle due to low numbers and several early injuries hampering the efforts.

However, since December the team recorded 5 wins and one loss and will be looking to continue this form into the final.

Russ Tomlinson, Head Coach said “It has been a rollercoaster of a season!  One big positive has been watching the development of the lads from week to week. They are a real pleasure to coach, they always want to get better and I’m glad they are all part of my rugby family.”

The later results show how far the team as a whole  has developed this season, and as a testament to this no less than 18 of the players have made their senior debuts, with a couple now regularly featuring in the senior sides.  This is what Colts is really about and demonstrates that Macclesfield RUFC is committed to growing it’s own talent for the future!

Sandbach also have a strong Colts squad, playing in Tier A of the Halbro NW colts league and , finishing in 2nd place overall.  This will be the first time two sides have met this season, however, both sides have a long history of battles on the pitch, having played each other over many years since the U6s.

When asked about the final, Russ had this to say ;

“Sunday will be a special day for all involved.  A day full of nerves. Some of the lads haven’t played in a final before in front of a big crowd.  It’s a new environment and a day full of emotion.  The senior lads in the squad will play their last game of colts rugby as they transition into the senior men’s game. Sandbach are a great rugby club and will pose a massive challenge. I can guarantee we will not just turn up to make up the numbers, we are there to compete in all areas and win the game. Training has gone really well this week. The team deserves to be in this final and as their coach I couldn’t be prouder of them all.”

Phil Mason, Colts Team Manager has been with most of these lads since the U6s:

“Finishing the age-grade journey in a Cup Final against Sandbach is a fitting culmination for these lads.  I am quite sure Sandbach will be throwing everything at it, as will we!  I am also sure that whatever the outcome, the players, parents and coaches will remember this game for years to come”

The game kicks off 2:30 PM, Sunday 21 April 2024 over at Stockport RUFC.  Entry is £3.00 per person (£1.00 for kids).  Why not make a day of it and watch the others in action too?
