Friday night’s test awaits the Women’s team

By Annie James

This Friday sees the Women’s team play the combined might of Stockport, Stoke and Ormskirk as they join together for the home side’s last match of the season.  The combination of players will be a real test for Macclesfield as many currently play, or have played at a higher level than the Macclesfield squad.

It’s been a special season for Macclesfield, entering a national cup for the first time and making it to the last 32 in the competition before being beaten by the very physical National 2 team Leigh. The women are undefeated within the RFU’s Inner Warrior development system and are undefeated at home. So, Friday is an important night for the side. A strong squad is available and Sunday’s win over Ashbourne has given coaches Demps and Jacko a few selection dilemmas to mull over during the week.

More important than the match itself; is that Friday gives the Club the opportunity say goodbye to Mary Thorp, who leaves to teach in KL this summer. A stalwart of the team since its infancy, Mary has been a key member in driving the development of the women’s game within the Club over several seasons. As a player, deceptively quick, skilful, and tenacious in defence, and who’s leadership at fly half has been a major factor in the team’s success. We will miss you Mary!

So if you still need your fix of rugby it’s this Friday night, 8.00 kck-off, grab a pie and a drink and support your women’s team.
