9 Macclesfield lads selected for Cheshire

Last Saturday the magnificent 9 made the very long journey to Alnwick to play for Cheshire Men’s team vs Northumberland in the Bill Beaumont County Championship. A potentially tricky fixture on paper coupled with a 4 ½ hour coach journey this could have been a real banana skin. Saying that after our “friends” at the RFU have placed us in National West 2 this will be a local fixture next season.

The lads had slightly different roles, Oli Longmore was Captain and Charlie Attis the goal kicker, this allowed the Oliver twins to focus on just playing, albeit Harry Oliver was Vice Captain.

The game started at a pace that Northumberland couldn’t live with, in fact some of the Cheshire players were amazed by the pace and skill of the Macc lads. Tries followed with Harry Blackwell scoring after a great interchange between Charle Attis & Harry Oliver. Tom Burden scored after a great line out move, tries then followed for Oli Longmore (his usual 30 meter sprint) James Oliver was unlucky as he was about to score until Northumberland 6 kicked the ball from his feet in an advancing scrum, penalty try.

Harry Oliver wasn’t to be left out of the try fest popping over for a hattrick continuing his excellent scoring form. The scrum was a weapon with the Percival brothers and Oli Longmore pushing Northumberland off their own ball and the hooker going for a fly !!

Danny Martin popped over and Charlie Attis kicked well. Special mention to Harry Harding who had a great game running over several local lads and playing the whole 80 mins.

Next week Saturday 18th May, the lads travel to Stoke to play Staffordshire.
