Macclesfield RUFC produced a spirited and at times outstanding performance away at newly crowned champions Sheffield, ultimately falling 43–24 in a hard-fought contest played in bitterly cold conditions and a strong wind.
Despite the final scoreline, this was a game that showcased Macc’s quality and attacking intent, particularly in a first half where they matched the league leaders blow for blow.
The visitors made the perfect start, crossing inside two minutes through James Oliver following a sharp catch-and-drive, with Ciaran Shone adding the extras for an early 7–0 lead. Sheffield responded shortly after to level the scores, but the remainder of the half was evenly contested, with Macclesfield playing some excellent rugby and standing up well physically.
At the break, the sides were locked at 7–7, reflecting a competitive and well-balanced opening period.
Sheffield struck immediately after the restart to edge ahead, but Macclesfield responded in kind when Harry Hughes finished well, again converted by Shone, to bring the scores back level at 14–14.
However, the home side’s quality and depth began to tell as the second half progressed. A quick succession of tries allowed Sheffield to build momentum, capitalising on a handful of missed first-up tackles and some disruption at the lineout. While Macc’s scrum had been dominant in the first half, that control slipped as the game wore on.
Rhodri Campbell and Matty Drennan both crossed as Sheffield extended their lead, before Austin Keogh added a well-taken try to keep Macclesfield in the contest. A penalty and late try from Callum Posa ultimately secured the result for the champions, though Samson Shute’s late score ensured Macc finished strongly and, crucially, claimed a try bonus point.
The result sees Macclesfield draw level on points with Tynedale in the race for a playoff position, with only points difference separating the sides heading into a fascinating run-in.

Director of Rugby Matt Coleridge was proud of his side’s efforts:
“Despite the scoreline I’m very proud of the performance.
We came here with mixed form this calendar year and a couple of players out, and gave it a real go.
They are worthy champions and we wish them well.
We played some of the best rugby we have all season and were really good for long periods, but we let ourselves down at times with some soft tries and our lineout could have been better.
It’s a strange run-in now, with us and Tynedale separated by just points difference. It’s going to be really exciting.
Whatever the outcome, this team has exceeded all expectations and given the club a wonderful season.”
Macclesfield now turn their attention to a crucial run-in, starting with a trip to Darlington Mowden Park on 11th April, before returning home for the final home fixture of the season against Otley.
