The women’s team are now well into preseason training with a focus on core skills and playing shape. With the team now training twice a week, progression has been rapid. In between training, Director of Women’s Rugby Paul Jakubowski caught up with captain Bex Ward to chat about her sporting experience, being appointed as captain and aspirations for 2026/27.

Bex what is your sporting and rugby background?
I’ve been very sporty from a young age, played in all the sports at school and have always loved team sports the most, and have tried lots of different ones and can get invested in any.
How have you found playing rugby at Macclesfield over the last four seasons?
It’s been a magnificent evolution of the entire team: those that play the game, the coaching staff and the regular supporters. It honestly just gets better and better whether that’s skill level, training attendance, game knowledge & experience, but also the lovely close friendships & connections that develop.

What was your reaction to being asked to captain the WXV this year?
I immediately felt totally honoured and a huge sense of pride- and a responsibility that I feel my previous experience in leadership roles have readied me for. The response from the group when it was announced was a really special moment for me too.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I’d say I’m calm, inclusive, often look for opportunities to pass on rugby knowledge, with clear communication as often as possible.

What makes you tick both on and off the field?
I think I have an innate energy and zest for life which leads me to want to make every day count, spend a lot of time doing things I love- and rugby is absolutely one of those. I have so far had a lifelong love for sport and exercise, so long may that continue.
What are your own aspirations for the team this season?
After our awesome 2025/26 season, I want to see our players really grow in confidence in their position, by gaining a deeper understanding of their role and how it can impact the play/game. I’d love us to also continue to nail things from training directly into match days. And most of all, keep being brave, strong and great team mates on and off the pitch.
Finally, what would you say to encourage girls to get involved in rugby?
That if you want to have the most fun, with the best people- whilst becoming the strongest, bravest and resilient version of yourself- and make lifelong friends where there is a place for everyone, especially those that have struggled to find a place where they belong, then it’s 100% for you.
